Why Work for the South African Government?

Where to Find Government Job Vacancies

1

The Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) publishes all national and provincial government vacancies at www.dpsa.gov.za. Vacancies are published in the Public Service Vacancy Circular every Friday. This is the most important source for government jobs in South Africa.

The Z83 Form — What It Is and How to Complete It

The Z83 is the official application form required for all South African government job applications. Without a correctly completed Z83, your application will not be considered — no matter how qualified you are.

You can download the Z83 form from the DPSA website at www.dpsa.gov.za/dpsa2g/vacancies.asp. Since 2021, the form was updated and is now a single-page document. Here is how to complete it correctly:

💡 Important: Since 2021, you are no longer required to attach certified copies of qualifications and ID to your initial application. You only need to bring these to the interview. However, applicants who provide false information will be disqualified and may face criminal charges.

Key Rules for Government Job Applications

After You Apply — What to Expect

Government recruitment is a slow process. After the closing date, it typically takes 3–6 months before you hear anything. Shortlisted candidates are contacted for competency tests and interviews. If you are not contacted within 3 months of the closing date, you were not shortlisted for that particular post.

Do not call the department repeatedly to follow up — this is frowned upon in the public service. Instead, keep applying for other posts while you wait.

⚠️ Corruption Warning: Government jobs are allocated through a competitive, merit-based process. Anyone who claims they can "get you a government job" for money is scamming you. Report such individuals to the Public Service Commission at www.psc.gov.za.
