What is PSIRA?
PSIRA stands for the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority. It is the government body that regulates the private security industry in South Africa. Every security officer and security company in South Africa must be registered with PSIRA. Without a valid PSIRA certificate and registration, you cannot legally work as a security guard.
PSIRA Grades Explained
PSIRA certificates come in different grades. The grade determines what type of security work you are allowed to do and your salary level:

Most entry-level security jobs require Grade D or Grade C. Grade C also requires a firearm competency certificate if you will be carrying a firearm on duty.
Requirements to Get a PSIRA Certificate
- South African citizen or valid work permit
- Minimum age of 18 years
- Clear criminal record (SAPS clearance certificate)
- Valid South African ID
- Medical fitness — you must be physically and mentally fit
- Grade 10 minimum (for Grade D and above)
💡 Good news: You do not need matric to get a PSIRA Grade D or Grade C certificate. Grade 10 is the minimum requirement for most security training.
How to Get Your PSIRA Certificate — Step by Step
Find an Accredited Training Provider
You must complete your training at a PSIRA-accredited training provider. Unaccredited training is not recognised. Check the PSIRA website at www.psira.co.za for a list of accredited providers near you. Training is available in all 9 provinces.
Complete the Training Course
Security training typically takes 2–4 weeks depending on the grade. The course covers legal aspects of security, first aid, physical security procedures, access control, fire awareness, and more. Grade C training also includes firearm handling if you plan to carry a weapon.
Pass the Assessments
At the end of your training, you will write theory exams and complete practical assessments. You must pass both to qualify for your certificate. If you fail, you may be allowed to rewrite — check the policy with your training provider.
Apply for PSIRA Registration
Once you have your training certificate, you must register with PSIRA as an individual security officer. You need to submit your application form, ID copy, training certificate, SAPS clearance certificate, and pay the registration fee. Registration fees are approximately R310 for a two-year registration.
Receive Your PSIRA Certificate
Once registered, PSIRA will issue you with a registration certificate and a PSIRA ID card. Keep these safe — you must carry your PSIRA ID on duty at all times. Your registration must be renewed every two years.

💡 Tip: Many security companies will sponsor your PSIRA training in exchange for working with them for a set period — typically 6–12 months. Ask security companies in your area if they offer this. It means you pay nothing upfront.
Finding Security Jobs After Your PSIRA Certificate

⚠️ Warning: Working as a security guard without a valid PSIRA registration is a criminal offence in South Africa. Both the guard and the employer can be prosecuted. Never accept a security job from a company that tells you PSIRA registration is not required.
