What is a Learnership?

A learnership is a structured learning programme that combines workplace experience with theoretical training β€” and pays you a monthly stipend while you learn. Unlike a job, a learnership results in a nationally recognised NQF qualification that stays with you for life. Learnerships are funded by South Africa's Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) and are open to both employed and unemployed South Africans. If you have matric β€” and sometimes even without it β€” a learnership could be your entry point into a career in retail, mining, IT, finance, security, or dozens of other fields.

Monthly stipends typically range from R3,000 to R8,500 depending on the NQF level and the funding SETA. Most learnerships run for 12 months. At the end, you walk away with a qualification, real work experience, and a much stronger CV. Many learners are offered permanent employment by the host company after completing successfully.
