Joining the South African Police Service is one of the most significant career decisions a person can make. It is a demanding profession that requires physical fitness, mental resilience, and a genuine commitment to serving the public. It also offers job security, a government pension, and a clearly structured career progression path. This guide covers the SAPS recruitment process, requirements, and what to expect.

Basic Requirements to Join SAPS

Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee selection. SAPS intake processes are competitive, and candidates with additional qualifications, clean records, and strong fitness scores are prioritised.

How SAPS Recruitment Works

SAPS advertises recruitment intakes irregularly — there is no fixed annual cycle. When a recruitment drive opens, it is advertised through official SAPS channels (saps.gov.za), the DPSA vacancy circular, and Government Communications media. Applications are submitted through the official SAPS recruitment system during the open application window.

After application, shortlisted candidates are invited to complete a series of assessments. These include a physical fitness assessment, a psychometric evaluation, a medical examination, a background check and criminal records screening, and in some cases an oral panel interview. The process from application to final selection can take several months.

The Physical Fitness Assessment

The SAPS physical fitness standard tests your cardiovascular endurance, upper body strength, and core strength. You will be assessed on a shuttle run (bleep test), sit-ups, and push-ups. The minimum standards differ by age and gender. Preparing for the fitness test before the recruitment window opens is essential — candidates who fail the fitness assessment are not reconsidered in the same intake, regardless of how well they performed on other assessments.

💡 Prepare months in advance: The fitness standards are not extreme, but they require consistent training to pass if you are not currently active. Start a running programme and upper body strength training at least three months before you expect to be called for assessment.

SAPS Salary Structure for Constables

A newly appointed SAPS Constable starts at a monthly salary of approximately R11,000 to R14,000 depending on the salary level at appointment. This increases with service years and rank progression. SAPS members also receive allowances for shift work, danger pay in specific contexts, and housing allowances depending on their posting location. The GEPF government pension fund applies to all SAPS members.

SAPS Learnership and Internship Programmes

SAPS offers learnerships and graduate internship opportunities that provide a route into the service without going through the constable intake process. These include criminology graduates, social work positions, IT and cyber crime roles, forensic science, and administration. Graduate internship positions are advertised through the DPSA circular and on saps.gov.za.

⚠️ SAPS recruitment scams are widespread. Legitimate SAPS recruitment costs you nothing. Any person, website, or WhatsApp group claiming they can secure your SAPS placement for a fee is running a scam. Official SAPS recruitment information is only available at saps.gov.za.
