What is the SASSA SRD R370 Grant?
The Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant is a monthly payment of R370 from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). It was first introduced in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic as a temporary R350 payment, increased to R370 in April 2024, and has been extended each year since. In the 2026 Budget, the grant was extended until 31 March 2027 with an additional R36.4 billion allocation. The grant is designed for people who are unemployed and not receiving any other form of government support.
Many people still call it the "R350 grant" out of habit, but the official amount in 2026 is R370 per month.
Who Qualifies for the SRD R370 Grant?
To qualify for the SRD grant in 2026, you must meet all of the following requirements:
- Be between 18 and 59 years old
- Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylum seeker with a valid permit
- Be unemployed with no income
- Earn less than R624 per month from any source
- Not receive any other SASSA grant (except the Child Support Grant or Foster Care Grant, which you may still receive on behalf of a child)
- Not receive UIF payments
- Not receive an NSFAS bursary or any other government stipend
- Not be resident in a government-funded institution
💡 Important to know: The SRD grant is reassessed every single month. SASSA checks your bank account, UIF, NSFAS, SARS, and Home Affairs records each month. This means you can be approved one month and declined the next if SASSA detects any income. A single deposit that pushes your bank balance above R624 in a month — even money from a family member — can cause an automatic decline for that month.
How to Apply for the SRD R370 Grant
The SRD grant is applied for online only. There is no in-person application at SASSA offices for this grant. Follow these steps:
Go to the Official Website
Open your browser and go to srd.sassa.gov.za. Always check that the web address ends in .gov.za — this confirms it is the official, safe SASSA website.
Click "Apply Now"
On the home page, click the Apply Now button to start a new application.
Enter Your Details
Enter your 13-digit South African ID number, a cellphone number registered in your name, and an email address if you have one. The cellphone number is very important — this is how SASSA communicates with you, so use a number you control.
Choose Your Payment Method
Submit your banking details OR choose to collect your money at a retail store. The bank account must be in your own name — if you use someone else's account, the payment will be rejected.
Submit and Wait
Submit your application. SASSA will verify your details against several government databases. You do not need to reapply each month — once approved, the system reassesses you automatically.
SRD R370 Payment Dates 2026
The SRD grant works differently from permanent grants like the Old Age Grant or Disability Grant. Those are paid at the start of the month on fixed dates. The SRD grant is paid later in the month, in batches, between the 24th and the last business day of the month.
There is no single fixed payment date for everyone. Your personal payment date depends on when your monthly verification clears. After your batch is processed, the money usually reflects within 2 to 3 business days. SASSA does not process payments on weekends, so payments land on business days within that end-of-month window.
💡 Tip: Do not expect your SRD payment at the beginning of the month. Plan your budget around an end-of-month payment, and check your status during the last week of the month for your personal pay date.
How to Check Your SRD Status
There are three easy ways to check your SRD grant status:
Option 1 — Online (most detailed)
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status, enter your 13-digit ID number and the cellphone number you used to apply, then click Submit. The page shows your status for each month — approved, pending, or declined — and your payment date where available.
Option 2 — WhatsApp
Save the SASSA WhatsApp number 082 046 8553 as a contact, open WhatsApp, and send "Hi" or "Status". Follow the menu prompts and enter your ID number when asked.
Option 3 — USSD (no data needed)
Dial *120*3210# from any cellphone — even a basic phone with no internet. Select the status check option and enter your ID number. Your status appears on screen.
Why SRD Applications Get Declined
SASSA runs automated checks every month. Your grant can be declined for that month if any check fails. The most common decline reasons are:
- "Income source identified" — SASSA found money in your bank account above R624 for that month, even if it was from a family member or a once-off refund
- "Alternative income source" — UIF, NSFAS, or another grant was detected
- "Identity verification failed" — your details didn't match Home Affairs records
- Bank account not in your name — the account holder name didn't match your ID
- Registered for UIF — even an old, inactive UIF registration can trigger this
How to Appeal a Declined Grant
If you believe your application was wrongly declined, you have the right to appeal. You must lodge your appeal within 90 days of the decline decision. Appeals are submitted through the official SRD appeals portal, which is handled by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), not SASSA directly. Go to the appeals section on srd.sassa.gov.za, select the month you are appealing, choose a reason, and submit. The tribunal will review your case and notify you of the outcome.
Collecting Your Grant Without a Bank Account
If you don't have a bank account, you don't need one. Leave your banking details blank during application and choose to collect your grant at a retail store. You can collect your R370 at Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, Boxer, or USave using your ID and the cellphone number you registered. You will receive an SMS with a secure code when your money is ready to collect.
⚠️ Beware of Scams: SASSA will NEVER ask you for money, your banking PIN, or an OTP via SMS, phone, or social media. Red flags to watch for: any link that does not end in sassa.gov.za, anyone offering to "speed up" your application for a fee, and SMS messages asking you to "unlock" a blocked grant. If you suspect fraud or your phone number was changed without your knowledge, call the SASSA fraud line on 0800 60 10 11 immediately.
SASSA Gold Card to Black Card Switch
If you still use an old SASSA Gold Card, you need to switch to the new Postbank Black Card. The final replacement deadline is 31 August 2026. After this date, Gold Cards will no longer work. You can swap your card at a Postbank branch or selected Post Office locations — take your ID and your old card with you.
The SRD Grant and Your Job Search
