The Z83 form is the application form required for every South African national and provincial government job. Without it, your application does not exist — it will be set aside unread regardless of how qualified you are. Yet the form trips up thousands of applicants every cycle because of simple, avoidable mistakes. This guide shows you how to complete it correctly from start to finish.

Where to Download the Z83 Form

Download the current Z83 from the official DPSA website at dpsa.gov.za. Navigate to the documents section and look for the Z83 Application Form. Always download a fresh copy — the form was updated in 2021 and the old version is no longer accepted. Using an outdated Z83 is an automatic disqualification, even if everything else in your application is perfect. If you are unsure which version you have, download a new one from the DPSA website before each application cycle.

What the Z83 Covers — Section by Section

Part A — Position Applied For

Write the exact job title as it appears in the advertisement. Copy the reference number directly from the advert — do not paraphrase or abbreviate it. Write the name of the department exactly as stated. A single character difference in the reference number can cause your application to be filed under the wrong vacancy. Take the thirty seconds to copy it carefully.

Part B — Personal Information

Complete your full legal name as it appears on your ID document, your ID number, your nationality, your equity group, your gender, and whether you have a disability. These fields are used for Employment Equity tracking. You are required to complete them, but the information is not used to discriminate — it is for statistical reporting to the Department of Public Service and Administration.

Part C — Education and Training

List your highest qualification. The new Z83 form does not require you to list every qualification you have ever obtained on the form itself — your detailed CV attached to the application covers that. However, fill in what is requested accurately and completely. Do not leave fields blank.

Part D — Previous Employment

List your current or most recent employer. Again, your full employment history will be in your attached CV. The Z83 asks for high-level current employment details. Fill in the dates accurately — government departments verify employment history and inconsistencies between your Z83, your CV, and your reference letters will raise concerns.

Part E — Declaration and Signature

Read the declaration carefully before signing. By signing the Z83, you are confirming that the information you have provided is truthful and accurate. You are authorising the department to verify your details, conduct a criminal records check, and contact your references. An unsigned Z83 is invalid. Sign in the correct space — not on the line above it, not below it, not across the page.

⚠️ One Z83 per application. If you are applying for three different government positions, you must submit three separate Z83 forms — one for each position. Submitting a single Z83 with multiple positions listed is grounds for disqualification of all three applications.

Combining Z83 and CV Into One PDF

The majority of government departments now require your Z83 and CV to be submitted as a single combined PDF file. The Z83 goes first, followed by your CV, followed by any supporting documents. The combined file should not exceed 10 megabytes. There are free online PDF merge tools available — search for "PDF merge free" — that let you combine multiple PDF files without downloading software. If your files are too large, use a PDF compressor tool to reduce the file size before merging.
